Ask: Do You Already Have Market Signals?
Before thinking about influencers, ads, SEO, or social media, ask yourself one question:
Do you already have signals from the market?
Signals can include:
- Website traffic from Korea or Japan
If people are already finding you, the market is telling you something. And that’s valuable.
If nobody knows who you are yet, that’s okay too. You simply need a different approach.
HY TIP: Before launching any campaign, ask yourself are you thoroughly prepared? Utilize our Korea Launch Checklist to determine whether you are prepared to launch campaigns in the Korean market.
If You Already Have Signals, Amplify Them
One example involved an AI tech startup generating strong revenue from Korea.
When we reviewed their growth strategy, almost all of their traction was coming from creator collaborations.
The creators had already done the hard part. They had generated awareness. They had generated trust. They had generated attention.
At that point, the opportunity wasn’t finding a new strategy. It was scaling the existing one.
This is where paid advertising often becomes more effective because the market has already validated the message.
Rather than starting from zero, you’re amplifying what is already working.
Sometimes the Real Problem Is Positioning
Not every growth challenge is an awareness problem. Sometimes it’s a positioning problem.
For example, when we reviewed a hotel in Thailand that was already attracting Korean travelers.
The product was great. The customer experience was great. The demand already existed. However, when potential customers researched the brand online, they encountered a fragmented experience.
Some information was only available in English. Some content came from low-quality blog placements. The overall brand perception didn’t reflect the actual quality of the hotel.
In this situation, the solution wasn’t necessarily more marketing.
It was re-positioning.
How is the brand perceived?
What impression are customers forming before they book?
Does the digital presence reflect the quality of the experience?
Before expanding marketing efforts, we recommended strengthening the brand’s positioning so that customer expectations and brand perception felt aligned.
HY TIP: If you’re already attracting customers from Korea or Japan, review how your brand is being perceived—not just how many people are finding you. You can also check out our blog on The Ultimate Guide to Elevating Your Brand Awareness and Keeping Your Image Strong.
No Signals? Find The Signals
If this is your first time entering Korea or Japan, the process is different.
Without signals, every marketing decision becomes a guess.
That’s why we typically start with market entry consultation.
This includes:
- Consumer Behavior Mapping
- Competitive Landscape Diagnostics
- Market Entry Feasibility Research
- Strategic Positioning Framework
- Audience & Cultural Insight
The goal isn’t simply visibility. The goal is understanding where your opportunity exists before spending money.
HY TIP: Our FREE 90-Day Market Entry Growth Playbook helps brands identify market opportunities, audience expectations, and positioning strategies before launching campaigns.
Limited Budget? Test with Niche Creators
If you don’t have a large budget, don’t panic. You don’t need celebrity partnerships to validate a market.
For service businesses such as:
- Organizations & Institutions
We often recommend testing with niche creators first.
Why? Because creator collaborations generate real-world feedback.
You’ll learn:
- Whether demand actually exists
Those insights become valuable signals for future growth.
Larger Budget? Build Strategy Before Execution
A bigger budget doesn’t remove the need for strategy. In fact, it makes strategy even more important.
Korea and Japan already have established competitors. Consumers already have trusted options.
If you don’t understand your position in the market, spending more money won’t solve the problem.
Before launching campaigns, define:
- Your unique value proposition
Only then should execution begin.

Community Activation Often Outperforms Celebrity Marketing
Many brands assume market entry means hiring the biggest celebrity possible. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn’t.
Awareness is easy to buy, but trust is harder. That’s why we often recommend community activation.
This can include:
The right community can generate stronger engagement and more sustainable ROI than a high-cost celebrity campaign.
HY TIP: Bigger reach doesn’t always mean better results. In many cases, niche creators and engaged communities can generate stronger trust and more sustainable ROI than celebrity campaigns. Go Where the Audience Already Is
Every market has its own ecosystem.
Korea has KakaoTalk, Naver Blog, Naver Cafe, and Naver Band.
While Japan has LINE, Yahoo! Japan, and X.
The goal isn’t to be everywhere. The goal is to be where your audience already spends time.
That’s why channel selection should always come after strategy, not before it.
HY Tip: In Japan, choosing the right e-commerce platform is just as important as choosing the right marketing channels. Learn how Rakuten, Amazon Japan, and Yahoo! Shopping compare in our guide: Top 3 E-Commerce Platforms in Japan: What Global Brands Need to Know.
